“Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.”
those first couple weeks after escaping a time loop have gotta be disorienting as all fuck. all those little cues that used to tell you what’s about to happen are now triggers that cause you to brace for something that isn’t coming. you have to relearn the permanence of death – hell, you have reacquaint yourself with the entire concept of finality altogether. everything keeps changing but it never changes back and you keep having to remind yourself that this is normal. “it won’t reset anymore,” you echo to yourself, over and over and over, like a broken record, like you’re still trapped in a loop, like someone who escaped the time loop but was doomed to bring it into the future with them
its so shiddy when u have to convince yourself to do your hobbies. like, its fun, you like it, why cant you just do it. do it. do it. but what if…. mindless media consumption instead….
im so sorry to the seven thousand of you so far who relate
For things to really change, you will also have to start to let go of wanting their approval so badly. I know it can sound weird to think strategically like this with family, but if they can tell you’re really hungry for it, you give them a pretty easy in to control or manipulate you. Caring less about our parents approval is part of our development into adults, but that doesn’t mean it happens automatically or easily. This is just another one of these things, like setting boundaries, where you start working on it, and it will become easier over time.
I’d also try and remember that approval and support aren’t the same thing. If all we’ve ever gotten is approval or disapproval, we may have approval confused with support (or go for approval because we feel that’s the only way we’ll get something resembling support), but I assure, you, they’re very different. Support feels better and is more substantial and meaningful than approval. Support also tends to come with far fewer conditions than approval. Often, when we want approval very badly, what we actually want is support, which can happen with or without approval, and is a lot more emotionally nourishing than approval can ever be. Odd as it may sound, when we let go of seeking approval with people, that’s usually how we find out who really is or isn’t going to give us support.
I honestly do not think “AI will never be as good as human creativity” is a good argument at this point. Like yes, it is true right now, but they’re just going to keep trying to prove it wrong. To me the line is, “Modern AI is built off of PLAGIARISM, UNPAID and UNDERPAID labor.” AI is a labor rights issue, not just for the people who’s labor it would replace, but for the people whose labor was STOLEN for the AI to “create” anything.
Its very annoying that we often use technology in contexts where the technology is by far the least convenient way of doing things.
@amethyst-sage-29 well the specific incident that prompted this was one in which we had to login online to get a student discount in a restaurant, which took forever and used up people’s data etc. Rather than the old fashioned way of just looking at our student cards and taking some money off the bill..
Another example was a while ago when the windows of a room could only be shut by scanning a QR code and then setting them to shut; these were the type that are too high for people to just shut them but a few years ago (or even just in buildings that arent brand new) there was just be a pole that attaches to them. Our lecturer didnt have a scanner so we had to stop to see who had one.
There are other things too menus only existing via QR code is a common one.
This is not only kind of annoying but ultimately just hugely increasing our dependance on phones, you can’t comfortably exist in society without a phone that connects to the internet anymore, having an option to do something online is fair - say someone forgets their student card or the pole breaks or something - but we dont need everything to be online especially with no alternative.
i have been without a phone that connects to the internet for the 4 days of this trip and had to leave, no lie, 5 different restaurants because the only menu was QR code. at none of these places did they have a piece of paper to hand me if i couldn’t get into their wifi. why
There’s a series called Dark Winds on AMC with the entire first episode up on AMC’s youtube channel for free. It’s called Dark Winds and its a supernatural crime thriller set in the Navajo nation in the 1970s with an all indigenous main cast. Extremely famous amazing indigenous actors! I highly recommend it to everyone it’s free on YouTube to at least watch and see if you like it! (Edit because people are reblogging this again much much later with the second season announced. First episode is not on YouTube for free anymore!)
Support indigenous arts!!! This is so so important for us to have amazing and unique stories on big networks. If they gain support more will happen!! I’ve never in my life seen something this big. It was always on the cheapest free cable networks and largely ignored as a whole. It’s about time native actors and media got the spotlight it deserves~
